Increasingly, career changes are becoming the norm in career development. Career changes can come in many forms and can include moving to increasing levels of responsibility within an existing organization, making a change to a new company altogether, returning to school to gain new skills, changing to another employment stream altogether, or starting a new business. In many cases, these career changes are planned and implemented on purpose. In other cases, they can be forced upon an individual through corporate restructuring of some type.
In all cases, there are two main aspects to the career change. There is the concrete physical aspects of the change - moving to a new office or company, relocating to a new city, accepting new responsibilities, changes in income, going back to school, etc. The other, and often overlooked, aspect is the emotional and psychological impacts of this change. William Bridges in his book, Managing Transitions - Making the Most of Change, refers to this as the "transition" side. Understanding transition can significantly enhance the success of the change while reducing the stress, anxiety, and apprehension that can accompany this change.
